Gentlemen’s Breakfast Discussion Group

“The School of Athens” Plato & Aristotle (detail) Raphael

A group of Wingrave and Rowsham men meet in the Methodist Schoolroom in Nup End Lane about once every six weeks on a Saturday morning from 9 o’clock to about 11 0’clock. The first half-hour is dedicated to fortifying the inner man in the form of a substantial continental breakfast.* In the following 90 minutes we aim to nourish our minds by discussing a previously agreed topic.

We usually ask one of our members to stimulate debate by drawing attention to what he regards as the key issues that need to be addressed. This is not intended as a vehicle for his own views; he may however table a brief (one page) summary. After that it is a open ended free for all, mediated by the Chairman if he feels matters are getting out of hand.

We would like to emphasise that there is no intention to evangelise (even though the proceedings take place on Methodist premises). We welcome diverse opinions but would not endorse any one of them. We concentrate on broad social, philosophical and ethical issues and hope that, by the end of the day, participants will have a better understanding of their neighbours views and will have clarified the values to which they personally subscribe.
