The Pairs Knock-out 2005

Great News!

The final of the 2005 competition was played at Aylesbury Vale on Saturday 1st April. It proved to be an exciting match with a spirited fight back by Judi Malpass and Peter Lucas just failing to overhaul the lead built up by Peter Cox and Martin Cross. Congratulations to Peter and Martin and commiserations to Judi and Peter

The Pairs Knock out Competition

Members will be aware of the revised arrangements for this competition (arrangements that have been put in place to ensure that we can complete the competition within the calendar year!).

The draw for this competition was made at the AGM. The Qualifying stage of the competition will take place at Mentmore on Sunday 30th April. The winning pairs will go forward to place in a Stableford Competition on Sunday 25th June also at Mentmore. The losing pairs on the 30th April are invited to compete in a ‘Plate’ competition also on 25th June. At the end of play on the 25th June there will be a supper in the garden of The Barn, Castle Street.

The rules of the competition have already been circulated.

Bowls and Golf

We aim to win back the Hanlon Trophy on Sunday 6th August. We shall play Bowls in the morning and Golf after a light lunch at the Bowls Club. Tees have been reserved at Mentmore for the afternoon. Once again James and Jennie Henderson have invited us to use Upper Wingbury Farm for the BBQ in the evening. Full details later.

The Wingrave Bowls Club season starts on Monday 24th April. We have an open invitation to join them on that evening and/or any Monday evening during the season to practice our bowls. Just turn up between 6 and 6.30 p.m. and you will be made very welcome.

Autumn Meeting

This will be held at Aldwickbury Park, Harpenden on Friday 22nd September 2006 . We shall play the individual competitions in the morning and the team competition in the afternoon. On this occasion we shall return to Wingrave for supper in the Community Centre. Marie Loades has been booked to do the catering.

Past Captains

A Past Captains meeting has been arranged for the afternoon and evening of 14th July.

Details will be sent to all past captains shortly.

Finance

Given the healthy state of the Society’s finances the committee has decided that we should budget to make a small loss on both our Society Days in order to keep the prices more reasonable.

Handicaps

Always a tricky subject for societies!

Members are reminded that in competitions, other than the Pairs, two shots should be deducted when they are playing on the own course and have ‘local knowledge’.

Where members have had a club handicap in the past but have ceased to be club members we ask that they advise to Handicap Secretary of a realistic handicap for our society events. New members should be aware that winning a competition ensures the loss of shots for three years after their success!

Membership

We now have over fifty members in the Society and our numbers continue to grow. Our constitution requires new members to be resident in Wingrave or the ‘surrounding hamlets’. In the past this has been freely interpreted but with the expansion in numbers and many course imposing a limit on society numbers we shall apply the rule in future. (This should do something for house prices in the village!). This will not apply to existing members, wherever they live; we are delighted to have them! Where members move away from the village and wish to remain members of the Society they are welcome to do so, always providing they pay their annual subscription regularly.

Insurance

All members should note that the Society carries no insurance cover. Members should be aware of that appropriate insurance cover is the personal responsibility of those members taking part in all Wingrave Golfing Society events.

And finally

Please complete this application form for the Spring meeting and return it to the Secretary as soon as possible
