11. YOUNG AND ELDERLY PROVISION

11.1 Findings

  • The youth of the village ought not to be neglected and consideration should be given to the training of a youth volunteer if such a person can be found. Can we build on the success of the Skate Park project and try to find a volunteer? A paid worker for a youth club could properly co-ordinate and manage activities and help them run more smoothly (as at the Youth Centre at Wing).

  • As the village population increases and people live longer, additional facilities for the elderly may well be needed during the life of the Village Plan. Whilst present needs of the elderly are reasonably well catered for and Wingrave and Rowsham are caring communities in which people, especially neighbours, look out for each other, there remains a risk of someone slipping through the net. Is it sufficient for us to rely on others - GPs, social workers - to raise awareness of Community Care Services or should we as a village do more? Should the Community Centre open in the afternoon as an informal day care centre?

11.2 Recommendations

  1. Build on the success of the Skate Park by encouraging the youth of the village to do more for themselves.

  2. Refurbish the pavilion on the Old Recreation Ground so that it may become a meeting place for the youth, with them taking a major role in its running.

  3. The resources of Youth Focus, the co-ordinating body for voluntary community youth organisations for the County, should be made more widely known in the Parish.

  4. Explore the possibility of opening the Community Centre in the afternoons as an informal day care centre.
