4.1 Findings
- There are three roads into the village:
o from the north-west (Winslow Road) and the north-east (Leighton Road) -
the roads are straight and fast,
o from the south (Long Marston Road, known locally as London Hill) - the
road is narrow with sharp bends.
- There have been traffic accidents at all three approaches in recent
years, the latest in July 2003, in all cases with vehicles badly damaged
and with some severe personal injuries.
- Speeds of over 60mph have recently been recorded within the 30mph
area, up to 57% of vehicles exceeding the speed limit, indicating that
traffic calming is urgently required.
- The junction of Leighton Road with Winslow Road and The Green is
'blind' and has caused vehicles to enter the adjacent duck pond.
- Good visibility encourages speeding traffic in Winslow Road past the
Parish Church and makes it hazardous crossing the road outside the one
village shop, Figure 9
- Parked vehicles cause hazards for traffic emerging from side streets,
especially from Nup End Lane, Bell Walk and Mill Close.
- Speeding, unrestricted traffic makes the road through Rowsham
dangerous for pedestrians.

4.2 Recommendations
-
Conduct a new traffic census to determine heavy traffic
volumes at peak hours.
-
Install traffic management measures, co-ordinated with
car parking and footpath crossings at all three approaches to the village
and in Rowsham.
-
Discourage heavy lorries from using Wingrave as a
through route, Figure 7.
