7. PUBLIC TRANSPORT

7.1 Findings

  • Although there is a bus every hour to and from Aylesbury, Leighton Buzzard and Milton Keynes, the last buses currently arrive at Wingrave cross-roads from Aylesbury and Milton Keynes soon after 14.30. The service to the village centre runs only every two hours, the last bus being at 18.12.

  • As parts of England and the whole of Wales provide free bus passes for their over-60s, the possibility of extending this concession to our community should be considered in order to encourage the use of public transport.

  • As a village, we may not be able to have much influence on the local train services from Aylesbury and Leighton Buzzard. However, we should support the pressure groups who are encouraging the rail link from Aylesbury to Oxford and Bletchley.

  • We are currently supporting the Parish Councils Liaison Group and PAVAN and PAIN, through the Parish Council and the village, in their fight against Luton Airport’s attempts to increase the air space it controls.

  • CATS (Community Association Transport Scheme), a local volunteer organisation, provides transport for villagers at nominal cost in emergency or need.

  • There is also the Aylesbury Vale Dial-a-Ride scheme and the Buzzer scheme, which operates within a 5-mile radius of Leighton Buzzard. The Aylesbury scheme provides a door-to-door mini-bus service primarily for the elderly, frail and those suffering from mental health problems. It caters for wheel-chair users and operates from 08.00 to 17.00 on weekdays. There is a £5 registration fee and a scale of charges depending upon the length of the journey. Only a few Parish residents have registered to date.

7.2 Recommendations

  1. Improve evening bus services to Wingrave and Wingrave cross-roads.

  2. Investigate the possibility of improving local transport passes for the elderly.

  3. Support the proposed Aylesbury to Oxford and Bletchley rail link.

  4. Endeavour to minimise any increase in flights passing over Wingrave, Rowsham and the surrounding area.

  5. Support and publicise alternative public transport schemes.
